You've met Tea Trees. Now meet the founders!

9th Jun 2021

We think it's important for our valued customers to know who we are and more about our story.  We're the founders of Tea Trees Eco Ware and have been steadily building our business since December 2020.  Like many Australians, we've been completely taken aback with the amount of needless plastic being produced, consumed and expelled.  Our footprint was gradually increasing without noticing but 2020 was a tipping point so we decided to create a business where we could actually make a difference.  So what's the why?

We headed to Indonesia in February 2020 (yes, it was very close to lockdown and we're thankful for that trip pre - Covid) and on day 1 we walked along Seminyak Beach in Bali.  Pristine water and squeaky white sand awaited, but we were absolutely devastated with what we saw.

Plastic on Seminyak BeachPlastic as far as the eye could see.  The ocean seemed to have more plastic than water.  There were hundreds of Balinese cleaning the beach.  It wasn't only drink bottles & straws.  It was cleaning bottles.  Toothbrushes.  Buckets.  Literally hundreds of thousands of single use plastic bottles for kilometres.  We since learned the same process continued every single day.  Tractors would pile the plastic up at low tide, they'd move in the huge trucks to load and take off to LANDFILL and they'd repeat.  Every.  Single.  Day.  The locals told us the tides moved the plastic from Jakarta after floodwaters washed the streets and it had never been as bad as it was.

Not only was the ocean awash with plastic, the trucks simply dumped this waste into landfill for the cycle to continue.  We also witnessed many many large fish which had perished, some with the contents of their stomach visable and they all had ingested plastic to some degree.

Coming back home we noticed how much plastic our family consumed on a daily basis.  Walking into a major grocery store, so much produce is being packaged in plastic for no reason.  Most drink bottles are not recycled.  Refills are barely an option.  And anything sold as being 'green' is often twice the price - for many this isn't an option.

So we decided to make a change.  We created a range of home cleaning and hand wash products which truly reduce the amount of waste entering our environment.  We've formulated dissolving cleaning tablets which can be dropped into any spray bottle to create 500mls of cleaning solution (kitchen cleaner, bathroom cleaner, multi purpose cleaner and glass cleaner).  Our cleaning bottles are 100% recycled and made in Australia.  The cost of transport is so much less than shipping 500mls of water.  Our shipping company is 100% Carbon Offset and our mailing packaging is completely recyclable. We even use old fashioned stamps and plant based inks on our boxes instead of plastic / printed boxes.  Each tablet used is one less plastic bottle being discarded.

The final piece of the puzzle was to make the product greener AND affordable.  Our refill tablets work out at only $3.75 each, delivered to your door.

Then we took aim at the waste created by throwing out kitchen cloths and created 100% plant based cleaning cloths which are washable and reusable.  Our bamboo and sustainable cotton kitchen and cleaning cloths clean the home beautifully - then simply throw them in the wash and hang them to dry and they're as good as new.

Finally we created FOMO Foaming Hand wash.  Our foaming bottles are 100% recyclable and again, drop in a tablet, add your tap water and you have delightful, light, gentle and antibacterial foaming handwash.  The kids love it - it's our best selling product and works a treat.

So that's the why.  And for the who?  Sas and Stu live in Torquay, Victoria.  We're a beach family, have two rabbits and two chickens - they don't lay, but that's OK as they eat all our scraps and are hillarious.  We have 4 kids, love to be involved in the local community & both love long distance running... beach days are great days.  Winter is a drag but it makes you appreciate Summer more.  We love to travel, hang with friends and try to get the occasional surf & game of golf in.  We're forever thankful to our loyal customers and we're on a mission to take on single use plastic but can't do it without you!
